Reiki Energy cannot be channeled and learned over a website. This site is for informational purposes only. If you are looking to become a Reiki Practitioner you will need to find a Reiki Teacher or Master. The word Master is a Western term and is not used in Japan. Reiki is not meant to replace medical help. You should not discontinue medical treatments when you start Reiki. Reiki is meant to work with your treatments and enhance your health. You should always consult with a doctor or health care professional if you are in need of medical care.
What is Gendai Reiki Ho and how does it compare to what is taught by the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai in Japan?
As Reiki traveled out of Japan, it was bound to change. Western styles and modern people live very differently from Usui Sensi's time. Hiroshi Doi would travel outside of Japan and liked some of what he saw. But he also realized there was much misinformation and wanted to bring facts to the west. Gendai Reiki Ho means, modern Reiki method for healing. It is different than what the Gakkai is doing in Japan and how Usui Sensei taught it. Never the less, it is very effective. Usui Sensei did not invent this type of hands on healing. It has been done for thousands of years. Usui Sensei has been attributed with bringing it back.
Is Reiki part of a Religion or Mystical Practice?
No. Reiki can be used alongside religious practices but it has nothing to do with any religion. Reiki simply means Universal Energy. Everything in nature contains energy and we are all connected by this energy. Reiki is not a Mystical Practice and should never be used as such. The use of Tarot Cards, Pendulums, Crystals, etc. are not part of Reiki and should not be. Watch "scattered" energy. Someone who is using many different forms. I recently met a woman who was talking about how she uses so many different approaches, it was difficult listening to her because she jumped around so much. Her mind was not focused and I came away from her feeling very agitated. This is how the "wrong" energy can harmful.
How does Reiki work?
Usui Sensei considered Reiki to be a very pure energy of love. He believed that this loving energy could be taught and shared with anyone. When he first felt this energy he knew he had to share it with others and realized it could help people heal. He worked on a way to open the channel of healing energy in others by coming up with techniques his students could use to learn how to visualize and use their intentions. He taught them hand positions, and when some students had difficulty visualizing this energy, he came up with 3 symbols. Although he never used them himself, he realized some students needed a symbol to concentrate on until they became better at visualization.
Universal Energy is brought through the open channel of the practitioner, usually through the top of the head, and then travels throughout the body. The practitioner then allows the energy to flow through their hands to the person, animal or plant they are working with. The practitioner does not have to touch the person, just come into their aura.
How does healing take place?
Reiki Practitioners do not heal you. They simply open the channel for energy to flow through you. If your body needs that energy it will take it in and it will go where it is needed. Reiki Practitioners can not send the energy to that area, your own body does it. Reiki Practitioners do not give you their energy. Universal Energy should be flowing through them to you. This is a very important point. If someone has not been trained correctly, they could be sending you the wrong energy, a harmful energy. It is very important to know who they trained with. Feel free to ask to see their certification and their lineage. Remember, Reiki is Universal Energy of Love.
How does someone become a Reiki Practitioner?
You need to find a Reiki Teacher. They may go by Reiki Master, Master Teacher or Shihan. The word Master is a Western term and is not a term Usui used. It is very important to look into their lineage. Who have they been taught by, and trace back as far as you can to establish where the Universal Energy first came from. You cannot become a practitioner or teacher through books or over the internet. Your channel cannot be opened this way. You need to find a teacher to work with in person.
Back in the early 80's, while living in California, I used to see advertisements that read, "Become a Reiki Master in just 1 weekend". I can tell you this was just for money and is not a good way to learn. My journey began in the early 80's when I first experienced Reiki. It gave me clarity and from then on I wanted to know more. It wasn't until I moved to Maine that I found a truly gifted and talented Shihan and started my path. That was in 2002 when I became a level 1 SHO-DEN of Gendai Reiki Ho. I did not feel ready to go to level 2 OKU-DEN, until 2003. A long time passed until I felt ready for level 3 SHINPIN-DEN, which took place in 2014. I did not truly feel a spiritual awakening until just this year 2017.
So you see, this is a mindful path, not a race. Let me compare it to a dance student I once had. I taught ballroom for a few years and had a student that wanted more steps, more steps. He never worked on perfecting the step or the technique. He was not good at leading a partner, and couldn't see, unless he could lead his partner effectively , then he would never be considered a good dancer. Knowing more steps was not enough to make him a good dancer.
I have had people tell me that they have had Reiki before but never felt the type of experience they felt with me. I've been told I give off intense heat and they feel there are souls or guides around me. A person who calls themselves a physic, told me the energy was so strong around me that it acts like an antenna that draws souls in. The first time I experienced this I questioned it's legitimacy, but now accept the information I'm given and pass it on to the person I'm working with.
This experience should not be considered part of Reiki. More like a side effect. Not all practitioners have this happen and should not be the deciding factor on whether or not you have Reiki.
How do I know if someone is a legitimate practitioner?
Ask for their lineage and their certifications. This is no different than finding a good yoga teacher, massage therapist, or other professional. There are no state licenses but they should have certification. You may come across people who baulk at this. They may say they invented their own process, but they still needed a Teacher to open their channel. Ego is our greatest enemy, and sometimes people want others to follow them so badly they will make up their own type of Reiki. Ultimately, you need to feel good about your choice. My first experience was profound and I never felt anything like it.
Would you be able to tell me who my guides are?
Maybe. I can not guarantee this. If you are coming for Reiki, this is what I am concentrating on. I am not a Physic and cannot tell your fortune. If someone wants to be heard they will let me know they are there. The souls that are around you are not there by your choice, but theirs. You may not know who they are. They may be a relative or a distinct friend of a relative. When they share information with me, it is for your benefit, showing me a picture of something or telling me something only you would know.
I CAN NOT SUMMON ANYONE! This is very important. I have no control over this. It happens organically so please do not make an appointment expecting it.
What are Reiki Symbols?
Usui Sensei would occasionally work with a student that had trouble visualizing what the energy looked like. Since visualization is important to our intentions, Usui Sensei came up with 3 basic symbols his students could concentrate on, until the time came when they no longer needed them. He never used symbols himself. They are not necessary for all practitioners. If someone uses them, it is because they feel they need them.
If Reiki is safe how can I receive negative energy?
I mentioned that you can not become a Reiki Practitioner over the internet or by reading a manual. The channel to Universal Energy, which is believed to be pure love, can only be opened by a Reiki Teacher. If the practitioner has not gone through this process they might be sending you their own energy. This is something I have experienced at times. There may be someone who has much negativity in their life and cannot separate it from the Reiki Energy or they never received the proper training. So, you see, Reiki itself is not harmful but the practitioner may not be receiving and sending energy properly, or has not been properly trained.
What should I expect when I see a practitioner?
You may feel more comfortable lying down on a massage table or sitting in a chair. This should be up to you. Reiki can be done with the practitioners hands away from the body or touching. This is also up to you and the practitioner. A skilled Reiki practitioner will be able to "scan" the body and feel where there are problems. Remember, this is VERY IMPORTANT: Practitioners can not heal you. Practitioners can not direct the energy to a certain spot in your body. The Practitioners roll is to receive the energy and send it over to you. YOUR body will do what it needs with that energy. There shouldn't be anything mystical about your session. It is simply a transfer of energy. A session may take 30 minutes or up to 90 minutes, this is up the individual practitioner.
You may feel heat coming from the practitioners hands. You might feel disoriented after your session. You might feel nothing at all. Again, your body will take in what it needs and discard the rest. The experience is different for everyone. One of my clients fell asleep for the session. When he awoke he said it felt like he had been asleep for hours. He was well rested. He received what he needed. The best advice I have is this, go in with an open mind and no expectations. If someone is making you big promises, go elsewhere.
Can Reiki be sent to someone?
I said you can not become a Reiki Practitioner over the internet. The channel that needs to be opened has to be done in person. But once you are a practitioner, you can send your intentions to someone at a distance. This is no difference then when someone prays for someone else. The practitioner is sending the intention to the person/persons while they are receiving Universal Energy. Another tool is to send the Universal Energy they are receiving and place it on an object, then give that object to someone. An important point here; the practitioner needs to remove any negative energy from the object first.
Can Reiki be given to animals?
Animals are much more in tune with nature and Universal Energy then we are. They love massage and Reiki. I recently visited a friend who has a 14 year old dog who's legs are failing but still gets around. She came up to me and I instantly started giving her Reiki. I was stroking her head and ears when her owner said, "You must have the magic touch, she usually hollers when anyone touches her ears".
Is Reiki and Tapping the same thing?
No. Tapping, also known as EFT or TFT, uses Chinese Acupuncture and Acupressure as the basis for their theory. I have certifications in both EFT and TFT. The idea is to correct blocked energy within the bodies Meridian System to release negative thoughts. I have found it to be effective, but it is not the same as Reiki.
How does Reiki compare to Qigong?
GiGong comes from China and also uses the Meridian System. It takes much practice to learn the movements and also relies on the acupressure points. I also study Qigong and Tai Chi. Reiki is easy to learn and does not require the same amount of time and study.
This information comes from the book A MODERN REIKI METHOD FOR HEALING, revised edition by Hiroshi Doi.
My teacher, Roberta Barnes, was a student of Hiroshi Doi.
Even though there are many modern forms of Reiki, I believe this is the best.
